New Refrigerator

I may need to get a new refrigerator.  I called Needs in Syracuse and they said that the moso bags will not help with the outgassing/plastic smells in new refrigerator.  She had no suggestions except keeping the door open and putting an air cleaner in front of it.  Can you please post this question to see what mcs people have done to outgas the inside of a new refrigerator?

Organic Pillow

I always have trouble getting a pillow to stop smelling strong.  This one is from Janice’s and they aired out the stuffing for a week.  I also have trouble with the smells of pillows from White Lotus , so it is not any particular store, it is the organic cotton. (Also had trouble with smells of kapok, etc).  It has been airing out since end of August. It still smells so strong that I cannot use it.  Any suggestions?

Sweet Smell in the Drum of Speed Queen Washer

I had my new Speed Queen top loader washer delivered today and the smell from the drum is making me very ill. Do you have any ideas as to how I clean the drum to get rid of the smell? It was suppose to go away as soon as I cleaned the drum and removed the finishing wax. Not so. It just seems to keep right on smelling.

How Do I Remove Smelly Grease Lubricant

I'm wondering if you might have any ideas about how to remove a very smelly grease lubricant from my garage door? I was away this week and my landlord allowed some company to "lubricate" the garage door with this horribly toxic smelling stuff, and it's getting in the house and causing me to have major MCS reactions.

Looking for Plastic Tubs That Don’t Smell

I have a long history of storing non-food items in plastic tubs, and have many of these in my home. But in the past two years, there has occurred a clear and obvious difference in the plastics used in the general storage tubs sold in the big box stores. They reek of an unpleasant odor, which does not resolve even after airing them for as long as a year, or by storing cedar chips in the tubs for months, washing with vinegar then leaving them in the sun, or any other method I have tried. Not only does fibrous content (clothing, books, papers) pick up this odor, but I assume that VOCs are at the root of the problem which carry health risks to chronic exposure to the source. I have refused to purchase such odiferous tubs after noting the problem with the first couple of tubs; however, I continue to have need to acquire more general item storage tubs and am hoping you can offer some information on this issue and perhaps a source for safer tubs at a reasonable cost.

Verizon Modem is Smelling Up the House

I just received a new Actiontec Modem from Verizon a few days ago. It has been outside and wiped w/vinegar, soap, etc and still has strong odor. We had to plug it in b/c my husband needs wireless for his work. We now have it in the back of our home running and the entire room smells like the plastic. Is there a brand of modem that does not off-gas these harmful fumes? I cannot believe this. We have never had this issue before. We now have it in a brown bag, but it still has the entire room full of this toxic odor. I'm afraid the walls, etc., are going to smell like this and we'll never get it out.

Sealant to Block Smell of Wood

I recently purchased a wool bed from Shepherd's Dream and am waiting for it's arrival. I have an ash platform bed from Bedworks of Maine. The slats are unfinished but I find the natural odor of wood bothersome. I have already put them in the sun and it helped some, but not enough. Can they be finished or sealed with the shellac you recommend or something else so I can't smell the wood or would this compromise the mattress?

Tile Glue Smell in New Shower

My husband installed a tile shower in my bathroom in mid September of 2011, and I can still smell the tile adhesive he used. He's a contractor and he used premixed tile adhesive. He didn't realize it would continue to put off a chemical odor after four months (he himself could hardly smell the chemicals and I wasn't there when he was getting ready to use the glue). I smell the adhesive smell through the grout lines and I don't know what to do.

Removing Perfume Smell from Clothing

I bought some jeans at the Goodwill last week and when I got home and smelled them in my clean home environment, I could smell perfume (there were too many odors in the store for me to detect it there). I have washed them numerous times, including in baking soda, and put them in the dryer, and I can't get the perfume smell out. I even tried washing them with Pet Odor Eliminator to see if that would do anything.

Marvin Fiberglass Windows

I purchased several Marvin Fiberglass windows and had them installed two and one-half weeks ago. Right after installation we smelled a strong acrylic odor throughout the house, which has only abated a little bit.  After two weeks of research I discovered that the fiberglass is actually coated with something called "acrylic capstock". I have searched everywhere and cannot find out how harmful this odor is and when it will stop outgassing.

Marmoleum Flooring

I work in a medical office and they have to redo the flooring. Fortunately i am away for 2 weeks while this is being done. I did a little research and found that Marmoleum a type of linoleum is non-toxic. I am a little scared that even after 2 weeks the rooms will still smell like linseed oil and that I will react to it.

Odor of Wool Pillows and Mattress

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a natural latex mattress with wool batting, and wool pillows. They have been airing out since I got them, because they smell like little sheeps. The smell is pretty intense, especially for the pillows. I did many reasearch in the Internet and could not find any customers complaints about bad smell of wool pillows.

Stinky New Wool Rug - What Gives?

Recently found your site and thought I'd solicit your advice. I purchased an all wool rug from Company C in December, 2006. After the first 6 weeks or so, I noticed a strong "weird" odor coming from the rug. I thought it was just the new wool rug smell. Well, was I wrong! The smell continued to grow stronger to the point I thought I was crazy. I finally contacted the company and asked some questions. Apparently, the rug was made in India, but it is all wool. The customer service rep instructed me to let the rug sit outside in the sun back side up for a whole day if possible to finish "curing" it. What the heck? Is there anything I can do to make the smell go away?
